NAECTE

I think right now, the issues that I feel applies to me. Is having teachers that are highly educated. The position statement that the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE), Just reinforces this. When we talk about children being in Early Childhood programs they need to have educators that are trained in early childhood. “The teacher certification/endorsement required in state funded pre-kindergarten programs, kindergartens, and primary grade classrooms should be specific to early childhood education” (http://www.naecte.org/, para. 1, 2014). In many places people are being hired without a clue what is developmentally appropriate for young children.
Just reading the position statement made me that much more aware that if anyone is working with young children in the classroom or in an early childhood facility that they need to have a degree that is meant for young children. Also on the website it talks about the annual conference that was held in November, and that the speaker was Dr. Patricia Cooper, and that she was gonna focus on the role that research plays in our profession. I didn’t see any specific information or issues that talks about how economists, neuroscientists, or politicians support or field.

  1. Rachael,
I agree that educators working with young children need to have the schooling behind them in order to teach them in a developmentally appropriate manner. I really do not understand how there are educators without the schooling behind them teaching young children. Without the education I have had in the early childhood field I know I would have a difficult time understanding developmentally appropriate ways to teach the children I currently work with.
    Thank you for your post!

I agree with your statement. I believe the people who work with young children should be required to have training and experience before being hired to work with them. The state that I live in only requires child care workers to only have at least a high school education and then pre-service training prior to working with them. In my previous job as a child care licensing inspector I would visit some programs where the staff only met the very minimum requirements and had no idea about the kinds of activities the children they were caring for should be doing and were not doing the children any service.

  3. Hello Rachael
I also agree with your statement concerning individuals who are working in the ECE field with minimum education. This is an issues I personally think contributes to an impact on children learning abilities. Also, ECE professionals suffer to an extent because they are sometimes not taken seriously amongst most economist, neroscientist, and policy makers to pay them in accordance to their training and education in the ECE field. I think that we are viewed most of the time as babysitters rather than educators because some ECE professionals do not possess a degree. I enjoyed reading your blog post you brought up a very interesting point.

  4. I agree, In GA, all lead teachers in ECE must have a credential in ECE with a CDA, TWO/FOUR degree. The teachers were notified in 2010 and now that the law is in place some- not all educators and directors are acting surprise. ECE professionals need education along with up-to-date training to be in this field.
